Alexandria is a good place for those with an eye for art and contains several excellent collections of important paintings and impressive sculptures. Of particular significance is Alexandria's Museum of Fine Arts, which is located along Mansha Street and dates back to 1954, when it was built on land gifted to the city's governorate.

Previously known as the 'Hussein Sobhy Museum', after the governor of Alexandria who was once an important part of the city's strong arts movement, the Museum of Fine Arts contains a large, permanent collection of Egyptian art works and features around 1,500 pieces in total.

Housing an internationally acclaimed collection, the sculptures, paintings and architectural works displayed here are must-sees on any trip to Alexandria. Mixing both contemporary and ancient works of Egyptian origin and others, this comprehensive art museum is well worth a day's exploration. The museum also hosts the Alexandria Biennial, when Mediterranean art works are displayed in a special exhibition.

Alexandria Art Galleries: Royal Jewellery Museum - Zizinia, Alexandria, Egypt, EG
Of interest to those who have a penchant for jewellery, this specialist museum is situated in the Zizinia district. Formerly the palace of Fatma el-Zahara, the building is architecturally interesting. Inside are many rare paintings, statues and decorations as well as the enormous royal collection of jewels from the Mohamed Ali Dynasty.
